Angel Oak Tree, South Carolina - Thought to be the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River

This oak tree produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet. Its largest branch distance is 187 ft in length. The Angel Oak is thought to be one of the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River. It was the 210th tree to be registered with the Live Oak Society. During the Hurricane Hugo in 1989, Angel Oak was severely damaged, but since then it has been recovered. Since 1991, Charleston city has owned this tree and surrounding park.

The tree derives its name from the Angel Estate, owned by couple Justus Angel and Martha Waight Angel. However, the local legends tell the stories of ghosts of former slaves appearing as angels around the tree. The Angel Oak is featured in the novel The Heart of a Child by Emily Nelson.
