Katskhi Pillar, Georgia - Where a monk lives at the top of 130 feet high rock to get closer to god

Georgia's Katsakhi Pillar is 130 feet high and it was desolate for centuries. There are visible church ruins on the top of its surface. It has been venerated by locals as the Pillar of Life and a symbol of the True Cross. After long deep studies on it, it has been concluded that the ruins were of an early medieval hermitage dating from the 9th or 10th century. The idea of living alone on the top of this rock was very scary. But a 63-year-old man has been living here for the past 25 years. He believes that while living on this dreaded mountain peak he has reached closer to God.

The name of this man is Maxim Qavtaradze and he is a Christian monk. Maxim is staying at 130 feet high 'Katskhi pillar' since 1993. He lives alone there and comes down only twice a week. Because it is not easy to come down and climb again from this height. There are 131 stairs to go upstairs, which take 20 minutes to go, and climbing its height is not the case for everyone. The goods he needed are delivered through a Chakariginni by his followers. A small cottage is located on top of the pillar where a prayer room is built in it. Some priests and some troubled young people sometimes come here and pray. 

Before becoming a monk, Maxim used to work as a crane operator. He explains that he was addicted to alcohol and drugs in his young age. But after that he decided to change his life and become a monk.

This road is at an elevation of 15,260 feet above sea level. The death road length is about 64 kilometers, which is sloppy along with being dirty. During the rainy season from November to March, rain and fog can severely interfere with visibility, and with the flow of water, the road can turn into a muddy track. For this reason, during the driving, the tires of the vehicles slips down the deep valley. The width of this road is very narrow and dangerous. Most of the road is the width of a single vehicle. The road is barely three metres wide. There is a situation in many spots on the road, where two cars can not even cross each other. People driving and passing through this road are always scared due to its horrible shape. Many times the tires of the vehicles hangs down, in such cases it has to be taken out carefully.

In this way many vehicles fall down below hundreds of feet. It is estimated that 200 to 300 people die yearly along this road. There are cross-markings on many spots of the road where vehicles have fallen. Where the common people are afraid of going on this road, on the other hand, it is the favorite place of the Adventurers Riders. But at least 18 cyclists have been killed on the road since 1998. The danger of road made it a popular tourist destination in the 1990s. Especially the mountain biking enthusiasts have made it a favorite destination for downhill biking because there is a 64-kilometer stretch of downhill ride with only one small uphill section.

To protect the monks from the strong cold winds during ice age, the entrance to the cave was covered with stones. Theopetra cave was constructed around 23,000 years ago. It is believed that caves around Meteora were constantly inhabited between 50,000 and 5,000 years ago.

In the 9th century a group of monks reached here, since then there is evidence of human living here. The total population of the Meteora monasteries in 2015 was 56. However now there are more facilities than ever before. German geologist Phillipson came here in the 19th century. According to him thousands of years ago, there was a large river which had a narrow and long route that meet in the sea at the end. He said that due to a deltoid cone of river and further transformed by earthquakes, the creation of the big boulders is formed. The monasteries now serve as a famous tourist attraction.
