The journey of Bastei bridge was started in 1824 when it was first constructed in the wooden form for connecting the several rocks and then replaced by the present Bastei Bridge made of sandstone in 1851. The present bridge is 76.5 m long and its seven arches span a ravine 40 m deep. The main reason behind the replacement of wooden bridge with sandstone bridge was the increase in visitors at Bastei.

The largest rock castle in Saxon Switzerland is Neurathen Castle (Felsenburg Neurathen) which can be reached from the Bastei by crossing the Bastei Bridge. Another well-known rock formation in the vicinity of the Bastei is the Wartturm, a large piece of which broke off in 2000. There is another famous landmark in the local area that is the fortress of Königstein. It is a hilltop fortress near Dresden above the town of Königstein on the left bank of the River Elbe.
