Preikestolen is one of the most fascinating locations in Rogaland County in Western Norway. Preikestolen is also called "The Pulpit Rock". It is a steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden (Lysefjorden is a 42-kilometre long fjord), situated in municipality of Forsand in Rogaland county, Norway. There is an almost flat top of approximately 25 by 25 metres on the top of the cliff. At the height of 2000 feet, people mostly come for enjoying their picnic. It is one of Rogaland county’s most visited attractions. About 82 square feet wide, this rock is a favorite destination for tourists. This is probably the reason why almost 200,000 visitors come here every year.
The pleasure of observing the vast river and the mountains far away from such a great height, makes you feel closer to nature. A project was started in early April 2013 which was aimed to improving the path up to Preikestolen as the old one was so small that it often caused delays and at some points on the path it was sometimes impossible to get through. By August 2014, the path was completed. Now access to the plateau was improved and traffic on the top and bottom paths is now a very short delay. This has made the way easier for tourists.
According to some studies the cliff was formed during the ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago, when the edges of the glacier reached the cliff. The water from the glacier solidified in the crevices of the mountain and eventually broke off large, angular blocks, which were later taken along with the glacier. This is the reason of the angular shape of the plateau. But there is a deep crack continues along with the plateau itself. And the plateau will fall down at some point due to these cracks. But according to all geological investigations, it has proven that this will not happen in future and the plateau's safety has been confirmed by the geologists.

The walk to Preikestolen is very steep in places. The path starts at the Preikestolhytta, at an elevation of approximately 270 metres above sea level, and climbs to 604 metres. The hike takes 1-3 hours depending on traffic along the trail, experience, and fitness level. Walking in winter and spring is not recommended when snow and ice is there and the track may be slippery.
