It is located on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Fussen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. It is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace. The Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited castles in Germany and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.
The castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. He is sometimes called the Fairytale King. By the time he died in 1886, the castle was intended as a home for the king. The castle was open to the public shortly after his death. Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit the castle annually. In summer, approximately 6,000 people visit Neuschwanstein Castle per day.
The King was a great fan and supporter of the world famous composer Richard Wagner, a german composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas. It is believed that the Castle was built in his honor and many rooms in the castle’s interior were inspired by Wagner’s characters. There is a very interesting inspiration behind the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle which was undertaken by the concepts of two reconstructions in 1867. One in May to the reconstructed Wartburg near Eisenach and another in July to the Chateau de Pierrefonds, which Eugene Viollet-le-Duc was transforming from a ruined castle into a historistic palace.
After seeing these two buildings, the King realized that both the buildings are representatives of a romantic interpretation of the Middle Ages and the second thing with his friend Wagner's musical mythology, his operas Tannhauser and Lohengrin had made a lasting influence on him. The foundation stone was laid for the palace on September 5, 1869. Its cellar was completed in 1872 and in 1876, everything up to the first floor, the gatehouse being finished first. At the end of 1882 it was completed and fully furnished. The castle can be visited only during a guided tour of 35 minutes for security reasons, and no photography is allowed inside the castle. Neuschwanstein Castle receives 1.3 million visitors per year which makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe and one of the most visited castles in Germany.
