In every part of the earth you will find beautiful springs made of hot water, even between the seas and the oceans. The reason behind the formation of most of these is the volcanic eruptions and many of these were said to be formed 20 to 45 million years ago. The temperature of water present in these springs can be up to 35 °C or more. There are many amazing hot springs present in the world. But today we will talk about one and only Grand Prismatic Spring, which is known as the largest hot spring in the United States. The America's largest and the world's third largest Grand Prismatic hot spring is situated in the Yellowstone National Park and Wyoming is mainly famous for Yellowstone National Park. Before further discussion let's first know what exactly is a hot spring? A hot spring is actually produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth's crust. Some hot springs have water with safe temperature, which is suitable for bathing, while some other springs have so hot water that can cause injury or death.
The Grand Prismatic Spring is approximately 370 feet or 110 m in diameter and is 160 feet or 50 m deep. The temperature of the water present in it is always remains 160 °F or 70 °C. The spring discharges an estimated 560 US gallons of 160 °F or 70 °C water per minute, which is approximately equal to 2,100 liters. Microbial mats (A multi-layered sheet of microorganisms, mainly bacteria and archaea) around the edges of the mineral-rich water are mainly responsible for the presence of different colors like green, bright red and orange in the spring. Due to extreme heat the center of the spring is always sterilized.
The water at the center of the pool is of deep blue color due to intrinsic blue color of water. The effect is strongest in the center of the spring, because of its sterility and depth. The color of the spring always changes along with the seasons. The microbial mats tend to be orange and red in the summer, whereas in the winter the mats are usually dark green.
Grand Prismatic Spring is one of America's most beautiful sites. So if you ever get a chance to visit this beautiful place, then never let it go. But one advise is must needed for everyone, that is, if you ever go to this amazing place then never touch the hot water of this spring otherwise your skin can melt rapidly due to boiling heat.
