Mawlynnong village became the cleanest place in Asia in 2003 and the most clean village of India in 2005. The biggest specialty of this village is that the villagers themselves do all the cleaning here, they are not dependent on any kind of administration for cleanliness. Smoking and use of polythene is banned while rainwater harvesting is encouraged. There are dustbins made of bamboo placed in every part of the entire village for cleanness. Any villager, whether she is a woman, a man or a child, where there they find garbage, they always ready for cleaning, even if it is morning, noon or evening.
The awareness of cleanliness can be based on the fact that if a villager looks at any garbage while walking on the road then he will stop and put it in the dustbin first and then go ahead.
