Prabalgad is located between Matheran and Panvel and comes under the Raigad District in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is also famous for Kalavantin Fort. Built on a height of 2300 feet, this fort is counted as one of the most dangerous forts in India. This fort was previously known as Muranjan. Then it was renamed by the Maratha forces under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's rule. Its sister fort is Irshalgad. Right next to Prabalgad, to its north, lies the steep Kalavantin fort. The Prabalgad Fort was built by the Bahmani Sultanate to keep an eye on the Panvel Fort and the Kalyan Fort in the North Konkan area. This fort has a Ganesh temple. It is said about this fort that due to the difficult route, there are very few people come to this fort and who comes, they always returned back before sunset. Actually, there is no arrangement of electricity and water. Silence and darkness spreads miles away in the evening. Kalavantin is a 685m high pinnacle on the northern edge of the Prabal plateau. It is located near the Machi and near the Vajepur village.
This is the site of the Kalavantin Durg. Kalavantin and Prabalgad are part of the same hill which is connected to its sister hill matheran. Kalavantin Durg is lower than Prabalgad by few hundred meters. According to legend, it was constructed in honour of a Queen Kalavantin. To climb the fort, the rocks have been cut and stairs are made on it. There are no ropes on these stairs and no guardrails. It is said that if there is a slight mistake happens in climbing or the foot slips, then the man falls in the trench below 2300 feet. Many people have died due to falling from this fort. That's why may be it is called as the most dangerous fort. There are several rivers flowing around this fort. The "Ulahas River" runs to the east of the fort while the "Gadhi River" runs to the west. The Patalganga River is to the south. This place Offers gorgeous views and abundant beauty. The Chanderi Fort, Karnala Fort and Irshalgad Fort are also can be seen from the Kalavantin fort. The fort's of Chanderi and Peb are to the west. The Manikgad Fort is to the south while the Karnala fort is located towards the north. Prabalgad lies on the prabal plateau between Matheran and Panvel and can be easily spotted from the Mumbai-Pune expressway. From October to May this fort is safe for climbing. Climbing here in the rainy days becomes extremely dangerous.
