McLeodGanj is a beautiful hill station in Himachal Pradesh. It is a suburb of Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is a major tourist attraction which is located 19 kilometers away from Kangra. The high and low peaks of the mountain range in McLeodganj and the melting ice marks on them and the different kind of trees standing on the rocks drag everyone's mind towards itself. Due to marvelous beauty of this place, everyone is attached with this beautiful scenery of nature. McLeod Ganj has an average elevation of 2,082 metres. It is situated on the Dhauladhar Range, whose highest peak, "Hanuman Ka Tibba", at about 5,639 metres, lies just behind it. Dharamshala has two parts, Upper Dharamshala and Lower Dharamshala. McLeodGanj is situated near upper Dharamshala. The major towns near McLeod Ganj include Dharamshala, Palampur, Kangra, Sidhbari, Tatwani and Machhrial. Mcleodganj has one of the most mesmerising landscapes in the entire state of Himachal Pradesh. McLeod Ganj was named after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, a Lieutenant Governor of Punjab; the suffix ganj is a common Hindi word for "neighbourhood". McLeod Ganj is also known as "Little Lhasa" or "Dhasa", because of its large population of Tibetans. It is famous around the world for being home to the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. In March 1959, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, fled to India after the failed uprising in 1959 in Tibet against the Communist Party of China. The Indian Government offered him refuge in Dharamshala, where he set up the Government of Tibet in exile in 1960, while McLeod Ganj became his official residence. It is a home to several Buddhist monasteries and thousands of Tibetan refugees McLeodganj is the best place for people interested in learning about Buddhism. There are few of the most eminent and religiously significant monasteries in India are located here, including the Namgyal Monastery. The one of the most important Buddhist site in the town is Tsuglagkhang or Tsuglag Khang, the Dalai Lama's temple. It has statues of Shakyamuni, Avalokiteśvara, and a statue of Padmasambhava. The other nearby spiritual attractions include Chinmaya Tapovan, Osho Nisarga and Chamunda.
Bhagsu Falls, Bhagsu Nath and Anglican church, which are located in this area attract many tourists. Bhagsu Falls is a waterfall about 20 meters tall, is about two kilometers from McLeod Ganj. There is a cafeteria next to the falls and the area serves as a picnic spot for tourists. There is a Tibetan Museum in Mcleodganj. It was established in 1998 and inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama on 20 April 2000, has a collection of Tibetan artifacts and photographs showing Tibetans' struggle to preserve their way of life against oppressive forces. The museum displays over 30,000 photographs. There is a small lake, known as Dal Lake, about 3 km from McLeodGanj, next to one of the Tibetan Children's Villages schools. Seeing the sunset from the Dalai Lama's temple is amazing in itself. People come here from far away to see this beautiful scene. Tourists always enjoy a lot here and take several photos of themselves. Over the years, McLeod Ganj evolved into an important tourist and pilgrimage destination, and has since grown substantially in population. Many people come to study Tibetan Buddhism, culture, crafts, etc. The town is also known for Tibetan handicrafts, thangkas, Tibetan carpets, garments, artisanal peanut butter and other souvenirs. The Tourists must also visit the scenic Dal Lake and Triund. Triund is a small hill in the Kangra district. The route to Triund is a popular trek starting from McLeod Ganj. The nearest airport is Kangra Airport, 15 km from Dharamshala. The nearest railway stations on the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway line are at Kangra and Nagrota. The nearest railhead is at Pathankot. The beautiful city of Mcleodganj is surrounded by snow-covered hills and remains calm and pleasant throughout the year.
