Radha Swami Satsang is a religious organization established by Shri Shiv Dayal Singh. He is also called as Soami ji Maharaj by followers and devotees. Shiv Dayāl singh was born 24 August 1818 (Agra, Uttar Pradesh) and died on 15 June 1878 (Agra). He was the Sant Satguru of Sant Mat and Radhasoami Faith. Sant Mat means Teachings of Sants. In 1861, for the first time on the day of Basant Panchami in the Indian subcontinent, it was released to the common people. RSSB’s (Radha Soami Satsang Beas) main centre is Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, District Amritsar, Beas, Punjab . There are more than 20 million people who follow this ideology in the world. Radha Soami name derives from the gopi as Radha and Soami which refers to Krishna as swami, or as "lord of the soul which means radha is denoted as soul and swami is denoted as "The only one God (creator of universe)". The movement started in Agra, its contemporaneous headquarters are in Beas, with parallel branches found in India and outside India. Dera Beas is about 25 Km from Jalandhar and 40 Km from Amritsar. This place is also connected by railway route. Dera Beas has more than 4000 acres of land. There are more than 5,000 RSSB centres throughout India, and internationally RSSB-affiliated organizations hold meetings in more than 90 countries. This is an religious organization which is not affiliated with any political party. The main purpose of Radha Swami Satsanga Beas is to give a religious message to the people. Radha means the soul and the Soami means the lord of the soul. Satsang is combination of two words, sat means truth and sang means to be with or associated with. Satsang is also referred to as preaching of truth.
Shiv Dayal Singh Ji used to remain absorbed in the practice of yoga. Baba Jaimal Singh Ji was one of the beloved disciples of Soamiji Maharaj or Shiv Dayal Singh. He gave Naam Daan to Jaimal Singh in Agra and asked Baba Jaimal Singh to practice sadhana alongside the river Beas. Later Baba Jaimal Singh became the founder of Dera Beas. Jaimal Singh was born July 1839 in the village of Lath Ghuman (Ghoman), near Batala, District Gurdaspur, India. Baba Jaimal Singh is popularly called Baba Ji Maharaj. Dera Baba Jaimal Singh Beas was named after him. Baba Jaimal Singh was the first chief of Radha Soami Satsang Beas until his death in 1903. Baba Jaimal Singh granted his Will to Baba Sawan Singh and ordered him to succeed as the second RSSB Chief. Arrangement of Langar in the Beas is very good. Langar area is spread over about 48 acres. The capacity of people to sit in the Langar hall is up to 50,000. Langar teaches the etiquette of sitting and eating in a community situation, which has played a great part in upholding the virtue of sameness of all human beings. Dera has also constructed 3 hospitals, which serve people day and night for free.
To the Radhsoamis, there are six things which must remember in the path of Spirituality:
- a living guru (someone as locus of trust and truth),
- bhajan (remembering Sat Nam, other practices believed to be transformative),
- satsang (fellowship, community),
- seva (serve others without expecting anything in return),
- dera (community organization, shrine), and
- bhandara (large community gathering).
