There are some mysteries in the world that force people to think about them many times. There is such a mysterious rock where the constant waterfall flows, but a flame burns just under the waterfall for years. This unique waterfall is located in Chestnut Ridge Park in Western New York, also known as Eternal Flame Falls. It is a small waterfall located in the Shale Creek Preserve, a section of Chestnut Ridge Park in Western New York. It is a small grotto at the waterfall's base emits natural gas, which can be lit to produce a small flame. The height of the flame is about 4-8 inches. The specialty of this waterfall is that the water flows throughout the year and a flame continuously burns under it. When flow is high, the water pours over the grotto, covering the flame and diffusing the light like a lampshade. Local people consider it a divine miracle. Various types of stories are also prevalent in this regard.
It is believed that this flame will extinguish at that time when there will be a catastrophe like the apocalypse on earth. People come from far away to see this eternal flame. Geologists from Indiana University Bloomington and Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology conducted a research about this flame. The researchers claim that methane gas is released from the bottom of the rocks which is the main reason behind this eternal flame. It is believed that in the beginning of the 20th century someone would have set a fire here, which is still burning continuously. Even in India, the natural flame is burning continuously since ancient times in the temple of Jwala Devi, one of the main Shakti Peeth of Goddess situated in Kangra of Himachal Pradesh. Regarding the eternal flames of Jwala Devi temple, the scientists are unanimous on the same principle. Eternal Flame Falls is a very popular place among the people. But the increased popularity of the falls has led to some negative impacts, such as an increase in litter, vandalism, pollution, and impacts on the surrounding terrain by tourists. Eternal Flame Falls is truly one of the most unique waterfalls in the country and one of the few remaining natural areas that we find on our planet.
