Have you seen a river that changes its color every season? Yes, there is a Colombian river located in the Serrania de la Macarena (It is an isolated mountain range located in the Meta Department of Colombia) province of Meta, whose water color changes according to the season. The name of the river is Caño Cristales. Sometimes this river looks red, sometimes blue, yellow, green, and sometimes orange, due to this specialty, this river is called the "River of Five Colors" or the "Liquid Rainbow". Almost unique is the bright red-pink coloration of the riverbed after the rainy period from the end of July - November. Actually, the color of the river appears to be changed due to a plant called Macarenia clavigera on the bottom of the river. This plant is found in some more local rivers, such as the Caño Siete Machos.
The length of this river is about 100 kilometers. This river has a wide variety of aquatic plants. It is said that when this river starts flowing so colorful, then there is no beautiful place on earth other than this river. The water of the river is extremely clear due to the lack of nutrients and small particles. You can come to this area from June to December to observe the beauty of this river. Because this place is kept closed for tourists due to heat from January to May. But, before 2000, some gangs of violent activities were active here. Here the tourists were not allowed to come before 2000, because the Colombian government declared the area around here as Red Zone. So people were afraid to come here. But now this area is occupied by the Colombian military.
The Colombian military controls a 30 km area around La Macarena. So now you can roam freely here. However, here are some rules that must be followed. But in a group, more than seven people can not go here and more than 200 people are not allowed to go into this area in one day. To reach Cano Cristales, it is necessary to travel to the municipality of La Macarena, Meta, in the Meta Department. There are two ways to get there, from Villavicencio, in a DC-3 cargo aircraft coming out every day, or from Bogota, by direct flight that departs every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.
