Introduction
Kuldhara is an abandoned village in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan (India). It was established around 13th century. Kuldhara village was originally established by the Brahmins who migrated from Pali to Jaisalmer area. These migrants coming from Pali were called Paliwals. A 2017 study suggests that Kuldhara and other neighbouring villages were abandoned because of an earthquake. Kuldhara is now famous for its haunted reputation. This village has been deserted from the last 170 years. It is said that thousands of people had left the village in just one night. Since then, this village is deserted.
Culture of Kuldhara Village
The residents of the village were Vaishnavites. There were statues of Vishnu and Mahishasura Mardini in the main temple of the village. Most of the inscriptions start with an invocation to Ganesha, whose small sculptures are also visible on the gateway. The villagers also worshiped the bull and the local horse-riding deity.
The men of Kuldhara wore Mughal-style turbans and jamas (tunic-like garment) with kamarband (a type of waist belt). They generally sported a beard, wore a necklace and carried a khanjar (dagger). The women wore tunics or lehengas, and some of them wore necklaces.
The villagers were mostly agricultural traders, bankers and farmers. For agricultural purposes, the villagers used the water from the Kakni river and several wells. They also tapped the water using khareen, an artificial depression dammed on three sides. When the water in the khareen evaporated, it left soil conducive for growing jowar, wheat and gram. khareen was situated to the south of Kuldhara.
Story of Kuldhara
The village that was so developed, then what was the reason that the village became deserted overnight. The reason for this was the lecherous minister Salim Singh of the village who was attracted to a beautiful girl from the village. He was so crazy about that girl that he just wanted to get her in some way. He started making pressure on Brahmins for this. He sent his guards to force the villagers to hand over the girl. It was a difficult time for the villagers. They either had to save the village or their daughter. The villagers asked the guards to return next morning, and abandoned the village overnight. Another version claims that 83 other villages in the area were also abandoned overnight. But 2017 study suggests that Kuldhara and other neighbouring Paliwal villages were destroyed because of an earthquake.
Tourism Attraction
Because of its haunted reputation Kuldhara village is very popular among tourists. Local legend claims that while leaving the village, the Paliwals had put a curse that no one would be able to re-occupy the village again. Those who tried to re-populate the village experienced paranormal activities, and therefore, the village remains uninhabited.
